13th North Arkansas Ancestor Fair
Leslie and Marshall, Arkansas - May 30 - June 1, 2002
Press Release
The North Arkansas Ancestor Fair will be held May 30-June 1, 2002, in Marshall and Leslie, Arkansas. This gathering has become a favorite place for people nationwide to look for information about their north Arkansas ancestors and to share that information. This Fair is composed of two parts: The Side Shows, or seminars, that take place on Thursday and Friday, and the Genealogy Swap Meet on Saturday.
The Side Show programs are given by several authorities in their fields. Lynda Suffridge, Arkansas genealogist, will give illustrated talks and answer questions about "Arkansas History, Geography & Settlement," "Finding Arkansas People in Federal, State & Local Records," and "The ‘Icing on the Cake' - Miscellaneous Arkansas Records." Brooks Blevins, Ozarks Historian at Ozarka College, will talk from his new book, "Hill Folks: the Many Ozarks of Arkansas." Friday, Daniel F. Littlefield, University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Native American specialist, will lead people through the steps from turning family stories into documented research in his talks, "Analyzing Family Stories About Native Americans," "Historical Events & Family Stories About Native Americans," and "Cherokee & Choctaw Research." Also, the Shiloh Museum of Springdale, Arkansas, will coordinate a public reception and program Friday evening about Essie Treat Ward, "The Grandma Moses of the Ozarks," a native of Searcy County who captured the Ozark hill life in a series of paintings done with dry mountain humor.
Saturday, in the Leslie School gymnasium, will be devoted to a day of swapping family information, shopping for books and other printed materials, and generally having a good time with other family researchers. The North Arkansas Ancestor fair provides free table space and chairs to north Arkansas county historical/genealogical societies and family historians who share their information and help people find their North Arkansas roots. All North Arkansas counties and families are invited to share their information and find lost relatives. Admittance to the Saturday Genealogy Swap Meet is free.
