Come As You Are

The 21st North Arkansas Ancestor Fair will be held Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5, 2010, at the Civic Center, Zack Road opposite the Methodist Church, Marshall, Arkansas. (There will be directional signs on U.S. Hwy 65.) The Ancestor Fair is sponsored by the Searcy County Historical Society as a venue for all North Arkansas genealogists and local historians to swap family and local information. For the first time, the Society will not require advance registration. Information Providers - family historians and county genealogical/historical societies - just show up, take a table, or two, and chairs and set up to share your information. If a Provider needs more than two tables, we will help them get tables from the store room.

The Civic Center doors will be opened Saturday at 7 a.m. for Providers to set up. The doors will be open at 9 a.m. for Information Gatherers and Swappers.

There will be space and tables for a big crowd, but if a Provider has a favorite location or wants to sit next to another Provider, they should arrive early. Also, if one requires an electrical connection, he/she should bring an extension cord. Food will be available at the Fair or can be had at Hwy 65 restaurants.

There will be a Mixer-Dinner Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Sunset Restaurant in Marshall. Again, no advance registration is required. There will be music by Fred Daniel, and others are invited to share their talents.

This year we are pleased to have Russell P. Baker, Arkansas History Commission Archivist - Retired, deliver three lectures on "Hints for American Indian Genealogical Researchers." He will provide practical research advice in three different lectures at 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30 on Saturday, June 5. The lectures, as well as all other Saturday events, are free, but because of limited seating, participants will be asked to register before each lecture. Registration starts 30 minutes before each session.

Mr Baker, in addition to a long and distinguished career with the Arkansas History Commission and Archives, has taught genealogical research classes for almost 40 years. His topic and lectures will be appreciated, as searching for Native American ancestors is one of the most popular pursuits of American root hunters, especially in North Arkansas. Mr Baker’s talks will take place in a small room adjacent to the Civic Center gym where family historians at tables will provide (and collect) information to searchers.

The Searcy County Historical Society is trying a "Come As You Are" approach because past experience shows that Providers will register but not show up, and others will show up expecting to have a table who have not registered. The Marshall Civic Center is a large area with many tables and chairs so the Society expects to handle all who wish to share information.
